Select students from each of Auburn’s elementary schools have been working with author Alexandra Siy over the past few months on a project called InstaSTEM. The project combines photography and nonfiction literature in a unique interactive videoconferencing program designed to inspire students to learn, read, and write about science.
Seven students from each elementary school were tasked with getting outdoors to explore and discover the natural world and take photographs of specific subject matters. They then moved on to researching and writing about their images. During this process, students interacted with the author through videoconferencing and online commenting.
Siy will be visiting each of the elementary schools the week of March 6 to share her enthusiasm for science, reading, and books with all students throughout the schools.
Student photographers will have a gallery opening showcasing their work at the Hilton Garden Inn on Wednesday, March 8 from 5:30–6:00 p.m. Following the gallery, from 6:00–7:00 p.m., Alexandra Siy will discuss her new book Voyager’s Greatest Hits: The Epic Trek to Interstellar Space, and she will be selling and signing copies of her book from 7:00–7:30 p.m.
